Bridget L. Moore’s long-simmering opus on 1970s soul singer Donny Hathaway is finally making it to the stage. A multimedia production that includes live music, spoken word and dance, the celebration of the artist perhaps best known for his duets with Roberta Flack (” The Closer I Get to You,” “Where Is the Love”) was first conceived by the Dallas choreographer six years ago.
Under a different title, it was supposed to premiere as part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Elevator Project series in 2020. Delayed by the pandemic, The Heart and Soul of Donny Hathaway is now scheduled for three performances by B. Moore Dance at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Born and raised in Oak Cliff, Moore is a graduate of the school and former artistic director of Dallas Black Dance Theatre.
Booker T. principal Garry Williams and Miracle Foster (a.k.a Mirek.e.l) are the featured singers, to be accompanied on keyboards by Kwinton Gray. Brandon Goodluv weaves spoken word into the performance while Moore’s troupe dances her choreography. Moore says she conferred on the project with Hathaway’s youngest daughter, Donnita, who leads the Donny Hathaway Legacy Project.
That legacy has grown in stature over the years. Underappreciated in his time, Hathaway died in 1979 of an apparent suicide. He was 33.
