In the realm of interviewing, the art of establishing a genuine connection with one’s subject is paramount, transcending the confines of a simple question-and-answer session. Few understand this principle as profoundly as seasoned journalist Kevin Powell, who not only had the privilege of meeting the late rap icon 2Pac but also engaging in multiple interviews with him.

Powell found himself in Las Vegas on the fateful night of September 7, 1996, witnessing the tragic event when the West Coast luminary was fatally shot in his vehicle. Succumbing to his injuries on September 13, 1996, 2Pac’s untimely demise left an indelible mark on the world.

“I wrote this poem to honor, first, Tupac Shakur, on the passing of his life.”

In this week’s edition of “My First Time,” with blackamericaweb.com, Powell graciously shares his recollections, guiding us through the early ’90s and his initial encounter with a mind that undoubtedly influenced countless others.

With a touch of nostalgia, Powell sets the stage for his forthcoming book, delving into the life of his most captivating interviewee, shedding light on a personality that has continued to inspire even in the wake of tragedy.
