African diaspora members in Cork are counting down to another big one this May as thousands will be flying colors to mark a week-long of celebrations.

Organizers have announced that the big festival, which will see tons of events including the famous colorful Flag Parade and Fitzgerald Park showcase, will be kicking off on Monday 22nd of May and running to the 27th (with Africa Day itself being celebrated globally on the 25th as it’s the day the African Union was created).

This year is going to be a particularly special one, as it marks the 60th anniversary of the union being created.

There’ll be tons of brill events over the week – from art and fashion shows, movie screenings, exhibitions, seminars, workshops, dance and music classes, as well as some cracking gigs.

Last year also saw a big contribution from Cork’s Indian and Brazilian communities along with other countries around the world that have connections to the continent.

Again this year, the week will be the occasion to bring Cork together around its African community and allies to celebrate diversity and the contribution of the diaspora to city life.

The events will build up over the week before they’ll go out with a flourish on Saturday starting with the exciting parade led by the Cork City Samba Band and ending in Fitz Park where they’ll have the final big bonanza.
