Apple Original Films and A24 have announced a new partnership on the upcoming project “High and Low,” which brings together the dynamic duo of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington once again. Washington is set to star in the film, with Lee taking on the directorial duties. A24 will debut in theaters before its global release on Apple TV+.

“High and Low” is a modern retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller. While specific plot details remain undisclosed, Kurosawa’s original narrative revolves around an executive in a Yokohama shoe company who faces extortion after his chauffeur’s son is mistakenly kidnapped and held for ransom.

The project, developed and produced by A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures, boasts a screenplay penned by Alan Fox and Lee. Production is set to start in March, Todd Black and Jason Michael Berman producing for Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures.

Lee will also serve as an executive producer through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, alongside Peter Guber from Mandalay Pictures, Matthew Lindner, Chris Brigham, and Katia Washington from Juniper Productions, with Jordan Moldo co-producing.

This collaboration marks the fifth time that the acclaimed Oscar winners, Washington and Lee, have joined forces, following their previous work together on projects like 2006’s “Inside Man.” The inception of “High and Low” was initially hindered due to the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes, which stalled production on Washington’s Gladiator sequel.

However, with the resolution of the strikes and the completion of Gladiator, the duo has prioritized bringing “High and Low” to fruition.

For Apple Original Films and Washington, “High and Low” marks their second collaboration following the critically acclaimed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” also in partnership with A24. The latter earned Washington his seventh nomination for Best Actor, adding to his illustrious accolades that include wins for “Training Day” and “Glory.”

Washington is represented by WME, while Lee is represented by Gersh and Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks, and Fox is represented by Grandview.
