It made headlines recently that a hip-hop album hadn’t topped the charts this late into the year for the first time in 30 years. Now, that streak is being broken.
Lil Uzi Vert has reportedly taken the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart this week with their June 30-released LP Pink Tape. The release also marks the third time the Philly rapper has debuted at No 1. Previously, they topped the same charts with 2017’s Luv Is Rage 2 and 2020’s Eternal Atake.
Trailing Uzi this week are SZA’s SOS at No. 6 and Gunna’s A Gift and A Curse at No. 7, among others.
1993 was the last time a hip-hop album didn’t chart the Billboard charts this far into the year. That year, it was Cypress Hill’s Black Sunday that debuted at No. 1 following its release on August 7, 1993.
