Veteran South African gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, better known as Solly Moholo, has passed away at the age of 65, his management confirmed. The beloved gospel singer died on October 2, 2024, while in hospital after battling illness for several weeks.

Moholo, an award-winning icon in traditional South African gospel music, fell ill last month while on a music tour in Botswana. After being hospitalized, his family revealed that he had suffered a stroke and was facing multiple organ failure. A public appeal was made to help cover his medical expenses.

“It is with great sadness that we are informing you on behalf of the Molokoane family, that our beloved legend ‘Solly Moholo’ has sadly passed on,” his management announced.

Rising to fame in the early 2000s, Moholo became a household name with hit songs such as Die poppe sal dans, Ka letsatsi labofelo, and Tsoha Jonase. His soulful music and energetic performances endeared him to fans across South Africa. He will be remembered for the “healing music he gave us over the years,” said his management.

Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow artists, and public figures. The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) honored him by saying, “He has left an indelible mark in the industry with his soulful gospel music [and] energetic live performances.”

The African National Congress (ANC) also paid tribute, with secretary general Fikile Mbalula calling Moholo a “true icon” of South African music. “His powerful voice, passion for spreading the word of God, and dedication to uplifting the spirits of many through his music will forever be remembered,” Mbalula posted on X.

“You will live forever in the hearts of South Africans Ntate,” the South African government shared in a tribute post.

As the country mourns the loss of one of its greatest gospel stars, Moholo’s family has requested privacy during this time as they prepare for his burial.
