Stevie Wonder has succeeded at many types of music throughout his lengthy career. The singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist has appeared on dozens of Billboard charts in America, and this week, he lands on one for the very first time.

“What About The Children” debuts on this week’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, Billboard’s ranking of the tracks that rack up the largest number of audience impressions across all rock and alternative radio stations. The tune opens at No. 48 on the 50-spot tally.

Wonder’s new collaboration with Gary Clark Jr. marks his first hit on the Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. While he’s one of the most successful artists in American history, the pianist was never known for his output in the rock field, so it’s not entirely shocking that he’s never earned a major radio win in the style in the past.

“What About The Children” is one of only two debuts on this week’s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart. Just a few spaces above Wonder and Clark Jr. comes “Panoramic View” by Awolnation, which launches at No. 44.

As “What About The Children” arrives on the Rock & Alternative Airplay tally, it is sliding backward on another Billboard list. The tune slips one rung to No. 17 on the similar Adult Alternative Airplay chart, another radio roster.

“What About The Children” marks Wonder’s first hit on both of the aforementioned tallies. It debuted on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart 10 weeks ago and has been steadily climbing…until only very recently.

While Wonder may be new to both of the rock-focused radio charts, Clark Jr. is not. The rocker has now appeared on the Adult Alternative Airplay tally with five different tunes. He’s only earned a pair of hits on the Rock & Alternative Airplay list, which means that the Grammy winner doubles his total number of wins with this latest smash.
