The Weeknd introduced his forthcoming album Hurry Up Tomorrow with lead single “Dancing in the Flames,” which arrived in mid-September. Just a few weeks after that electronic-pop cut dropped, the Canadian powerhouse followed it up with another tune—one that has become an immediate smash.
“Timeless” debuts on a dozen Billboard charts this week. It opens in first place on more than half of them, as fans turned the collaboration with Playboi Carti into a massive win, thanks to very healthy sales and stream counts.
Streams are largely to thank for the warm welcome that “Timeless” has received. The single opens atop three different streaming-only charts in the U.S., including the flagship Streaming Songs roster. The tune is also new at No. 1 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs and R&B Streaming Songs tallies as well.
Sales also played a huge role in ensuring “Timeless” became a hit right out of the gate. The Weeknd and Carti launch their joint cut at No. 1 on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B Digital Song Sales charts this week.
Billboard’s rankings that begin with the word Hot are all compiled using a methodology that combines streams, sales, and radio airplay. “Timeless” is just getting started at radio, but it performed well enough when it comes to the other two metrics that it’s become an instant champion on a few of those landmark tallies.
“Timeless” blasts in at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Hot R&B Songs charts this week. Those are rankings that The Weeknd in particular has ruled many times in the past, and he regularly returns to the summit with new offerings.
The global superstar has accrued multiple leaders on all of them, though his total number of winners differs from one list to the next. He’s collected four No. 1s on the Streaming Songs chart—the lowest among all the seven rankings. The same artist has now earned 15 chart-toppers on the R&B Digital Song Sales tally.
In addition to the seven Billboard lists that “Timeless” tops this week, the single is also new to the top 10 on just two other rankings. The collaboration opens at No. 3 on the Hot 100—earning the loftiest start among all new entrants on the list this frame—and No. 4 on the Digital Song Sales chart.
