Ciara lucked up with a hero in Russell Wilson as the singer recalls a time where her husband saved a child by recommending a treatment.
During a press stop at Power 106, the “How We Roll” artist opened up about her philanthropy efforts with Wilson and mentioned their foundation, “Why Not You,” sharing how they “love being able to provide opportunities for kids to live their dream.”
She goes on to share the story of Milton Wright, a young boy diagnosed with cancer who was given just 12 hours to live, and how Wilson stepped in to advocate for him to undergo stem cell therapy.
The entrepreneur tells the outlet how Wright was reluctant at first, but was ultimately convinced.
“Russ went in and talked to him and convinced him, ‘Hey, kid,’ told him his story about losing his father, everything,” she exclaimed.
“Before you know it, the kid changed his mind, got up and was like, ‘I want to do it. So you think about the power in that, it’s such a blessing.”
Back in 2016, Wilson wrote an op-ed for The Players’ Tribune about Wright, sharing how the one way he knew to convince the child to consider stem cell therapy was to open up about his father who suffered a long battle with diabetes.
“When I sat by his bed and looked into his eyes, I could tell he had accepted the possibility of death. But he was really scared,” Wilson wrote.
“What can you possibly say in that moment? There are no words. So I did the only thing I could. I told him about my father. Normally I like to keep my father’s story private, but I told Milton about his long battle with diabetes.”
Wright was successfully treated for leukemia using T-cell therapy.
