Taylor Swift became the most decorated artist in MTV Video Music Awards history on Sunday, claiming Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
The track appears on her 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift began the ceremony level with Beyoncé at 30 VMA victories; her latest win put her ahead.
She also received the inaugural Artist Director honour for writing and directing the song’s theatrical video.
Swift dedicated the new prize to Dolly Parton, calling her “the ultimate showgirl” and saying audiences were fortunate to have shared the planet with her.
The 36-year-old also premiered “Patient Zero,” featuring actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. It is her first video since marrying NFL player Travis Kelce.
The song is among four additions to The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, released last week.
Madonna, who entered the event with 13 nominations, won Artist of the Year and Best Dance, and shared Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
The song leads Madonna’s 2026 album Confessions II. The project also earned its team prizes for cinematography and choreography.
Accepting Artist of the Year, Madonna, 68, recalled performing at the inaugural VMAs 43 years ago. She described an early onstage fall that exposed her backside and, she said, nearly derailed her career.
More recently, she said, she had spent 18 months rebuilding her confidence and making music on her own terms.
Her performance included Carpenter and British singer Charli XCX, who joined her for “Danceteria (Afterhours).”
Madonna told the audience Carpenter’s team had taken five days to respond to her collaboration request, before she contacted the singer directly. Carpenter joked that her own replies were quicker than her team’s.
Lisa of Blackpink became the first Asian solo performer to win Best Pop, taking the category for “Dream.”
The Thai singer, whose full name is Lalisa Manobal, thanked her fans, known as Lillies. The video features Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi.
Britain’s Sienna Spiro won Best New Artist, while Raye also performed. PinkPantheress and Sweden’s Zara Larsson took Best Art Direction for “Stateside.”
BTS won Best Group and Song of the Year for “Swim”; Olivia Rodrigo’s “The Cure” received Best Alternative; and Nirvana was given the Video Vanguard honour.
The ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg, also included tributes to Parton and George Michael.
