Two weeks after the successful Tranoï Tokyo trade show, over 20 African and diaspora fashion brands showcased their designs at Paris Fashion Week from September 26-29, as part of Afreximbank’s CANEX Presents Africa initiative. Held at Tranoï, Palais Brongniart, the event offered a global platform for these exceptional designers to demonstrate Africa’s growing influence on the international fashion stage.
Afreximbank’s exhibition space featured a wide range of talent, with brands like Ethiopia’s Mafi Mafi, Kenya’s Adele Dejak, We Are NBO, and Katush, Zanzibar’s Doreen Mashika, and Nigeria’s Emmy Kasbit, WUMAN, and Bloke.
South African designers such as JUDY SANDERSON, David Tlale, and Thebe Magugu, along with Zimbabwe’s Vanhu Vamwe, also took part. Additionally, brands from the diaspora, including The Cloth from Trinidad and Tobago, Olooh from Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana’s Christie Brown, added to the diversity.
The highlight of the event was a stunning runway show beneath the iconic columns of Palais Brongniart, curated by renowned Artistic Director Jenke Ahmed Tailly. Three distinguished African designers—Sukeina, Lagos Space Programme, and Thebe Magugu—presented collections that captured the synergy between African tradition and modernity. These designs ranged from bold, avant-garde statements to intricate, culturally inspired pieces, showcasing the richness of Africa’s design talent.
Mrs. Kanayo Awani, Afreximbank’s Executive Vice President, Intra-African Trade and Export Development, commented on the significance of the event: “We are immensely proud of our growing impact on Africa’s Creative and Cultural Industries through CANEX Presents Africa initiative. This moment is quite significant as it marks the first time three of our designers have taken to the prestigious runway at Paris Fashion Week—a milestone only possible following years of consistent hard work and focus.”
Afreximbank’s CANEX (Creative Africa Nexus) initiative aims to develop the continent’s creative sectors by providing financial and non-financial support. CANEX Presents Africa offers emerging designers opportunities for skill development, partnerships, and market access, empowering them to create financially sustainable and scalable businesses.
Since its inception in Porto, Portugal, in 2021, CANEX Presents Africa has supported 80 designers from 27 African countries and the diaspora. This year’s event in Paris marked another major milestone in the global recognition of African creativity and innovation in fashion.
