It’s well known that actress Regina Hall is a comedic genius. Hall recently revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that her iconic role of Brenda Meeks in “Scary Movie” was mostly improv. In an Instagram clip, she explained that many of her lines and reactions were spontaneously created, allowing her comedic chops the space to play on set. And play she did!
Hall shared that the film’s director, Keenan Ivory Wayans told her not to “bother” Brenda, basically only do what’s written. Luckily, Hall didn’t listen, and she delivered lines like, “You’re on candid camera now” and “Out of my face!” and “Oooh that’s some scurry sh*t!” that still live on today. Let’s not forget Brenda’s butchered pronunciation of Shakespeare…genius! “Because I was like, ‘I know Brenda’s never seen Shakespeare, let alone, read it,” Hall told Vanity Fair.
This isn’t just a dismissive, “oh she’s funny,” this is proof positive that Hall is attuned, clocked in, and fearless enough to turn her humor into iconic scenes. Her improvisational approach helped shape Brenda, but it also made her one of the franchise’s most memorable characters.
Hall is slated to reprise her role as Brenda in “Scary Movie 6.” Fans are excited to see whether she’ll bring back the same spontaneous energy that made Brenda an on-screen standout. The next installment will reunite Hall and Anna Faris with the Wayans brothers, and hopes are high for revived chemistry and new laughs. Both Faris and Hall sat out the 5th “Scary Movie” film that was released in 2013, so having them both return for the latest is a treat!
In a joint statement to Deadline in August, Faris and Hall said, “We can’t wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn and Marlon — three men we’d literally die for (in Brenda’s case, again.)”
