YNW Melly’s double murder retrial is back on the calendar. A Florida judge recently rejected a request to delay the proceedings, meaning jury selection will begin on September 10 as planned. Opening arguments are scheduled to begin on September 16.

This retrial comes more than a year after his first time in court ended in a hung jury. That July 2023 trial—centered around the 2018 shooting deaths of Melly’s close friends and collaborators Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams—wrapped with jurors unable to reach a unanimous decision. The mistrial left the door open for the state to try again.

Since then, Melly has been fighting on multiple fronts. He’s complained of “cruel treatment” while in custody under the Broward Sheriff’s Office and has tried three times to get bond. Each request was denied. He’ll remain incarcerated until the trial starts, with the court siding with prosecutors who argued the presumption of guilt is still strong. On top of the criminal case, Melly is also facing civil lawsuits filed by the families of both victims.

Even while behind bars, Melly’s name keeps surfacing in the culture since the incident, something that he isn’t exactly thrilled about.  Earlier this year, Kendrick Lamar name-dropped him on “Euphoria,” and Melly responded: “I’m a household name, just for the wrong shit,” he told TMZ. And during one court appearance last August, he was seen mouthing something to his lawyer about “going home,” a moment that only added to the tension surrounding this trial.

It’s been delay after delay over the past two years, but the court has made it clear: this time, the show will go on. Come September, Melly’s legal fate will once again rest in the hands of a Broward County jury—and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
