Comedian Tiffany Haddish is sharing more about why she chose to marry herself, a moment she features in her new docuseries. The 45-year-old star explains how the idea started, how she carried it out, and how the experience reshaped her views on love and self-worth.
In her six-part Peacock series Tiffany Haddish Goes Off, she walks viewers through the story behind her self-marriage ceremony. According to People, she first thought about it in 2018 while dating a man she jokingly calls a “buckethead”. He once told her, “How are you ever going to get you a husband if you don’t do what I tell you to do?”
Haddish says she responded by thinking, “I’ll be my husband. I could take care of me better than you could.” That moment pushed her to reflect on what she wanted in a partner and what she needed to give herself first.
In episode 5, she prepares for her “wedding”, complete with a bouquet, vows, and traditions tied to her Jewish faith. She kisses a mirror, steps on a glass, and promises not to settle. She says the experience boosted her confidence and helped her build healthier boundaries.
Haddish adds that she now shows up for herself in ways she once ignored. She feels more whole and sees someone cared for when she looks in the mirror. She says she is open to dating but only if the person matches the level of care she already gives herself. “Everything that I’m doing for me — if a man can do that better than me, that’s my man!”
Photos of her spending time with Running Point actor Toby Sandeman sparked dating rumors, though she says they are just friends. During an interview with Seth Meyers, she explained that she is still dating and keeps a rotating “team” of matches. She prefers daytime movie dates because nighttime showings usually put her to sleep.
All episodes of her docuseries are now streaming on Peacock.
