Kim Kardashian revealed that she did not pass the California bar exam but remains committed to becoming a licensed attorney. The 45-year-old reality TV star and entrepreneur, who completed her law studies earlier this year, shared the news on Instagram Stories on November 8, months after taking the two-day exam on July 29 and 30. “Well… I’m not a lawyer yet, I just play a very well-dressed one on TV,” Kardashian wrote. “Six years into this law journey, and I’m still all in until I pass the bar. No shortcuts, no giving up — just more studying and even more determination.”
According to People, she expressed gratitude for the encouragement she’s received throughout her legal journey, emphasizing that setbacks only motivate her further. “Failing short isn’t failure — it’s fuel,” she said, adding that she came close to passing and is already preparing to retake the exam. The California bar exam, one of the most challenging in the nation, is administered twice a year and includes essay questions, performance tests, and 200 multiple-choice questions. According to the State Bar of California, about 16,000 people take the test annually, with a recent pass rate of roughly 63%.
Kardashian began pursuing law in 2018, inspired by her father, the late attorney Robert Kardashian, who gained national recognition for his role on O.J. Simpson’s legal defense team. Rather than attend traditional law school, she enrolled in California’s Law Office Study Program, which allows students to apprentice under practicing lawyers. The alternative route, available in only a few U.S. states, requires four years of supervised study, though Kardashian’s path took six years due to her busy career and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Throughout her studies, Kardashian has been active in criminal justice reform and clemency work, helping secure the release or commutation of sentences for several incarcerated individuals, including Alice Marie Johnson and Chris Young. In 2021, she passed the First-Year Law Students’ Examination—commonly known as the “baby bar”—on her fourth attempt. “Looking in the mirror, I am really proud of the woman looking back today,” she wrote at the time, describing the milestone as one of perseverance and resilience.
Earlier this year, Kardashian also took the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE), another required step toward practicing law in California. She celebrated graduating from the Law Office Study Program in May, marking a major milestone in her six-year journey. “It wasn’t easy, and it took longer than planned, but I never gave up,” she reflected on Instagram. “This experience has shaped me profoundly, and I’ll carry its lessons with me forever.”
While she has yet to officially join the ranks of California’s attorneys, Kardashian says she remains motivated by the long-term goal of using her platform to advance criminal justice reform and legal advocacy. “Each course brought moments of doubt, tears, and triumph,” she said. “But that’s the beauty of life: you step into the unknown, push through, and emerge with knowledge and strength no one can take away.”
