Michael Jackson’s Thriller Reissue Earns New Top 10 Spot

Already one of the bestselling artists of all time, Michael Jackson’s catalog remains just as valuable as ever, more than a decade after the King of Pop’s passing and long after he churned out many of his most famous songs. Jackson’s name always appears on charts in Western nations, and occasionally he breaks into the top 10 with either one of his most popular tunes or a huge album.
In the United Kingdom this week, Jackson claims a new top 10 smash on one albums roster, not with a brand new set, but following the long-awaited vinyl release of the superstar’s beloved compilation.
Michael Jackson’s Number Ones Debuts on the Vinyl Chart
Number Ones appears on the Official Vinyl Albums chart for the first time this week, where it opens at No. 4. The U.K.-based roster looks only at the bestselling full-lengths and EPs of any style or language available on wax, which was once considered all but a dead format in the music industry.
Jackson and his estate released Number Ones in the fall of 2003. In the more than two decades since, the compilation has become the go-to title for millions of fans to flock to when they want to hear the chart-topper’s most beloved singles. Number Ones can typically be found on a number of U.K. rankings, and now it has finally become a vinyl bestseller, in addition to often standing out as one of the top performing full-lengths of any style in the country.
Decades after its release, Number Ones recently became available on vinyl for the first time, and since the format is highly collectible these days, it is not entirely surprising that many of Jackson’s most ardent supporters rushed to pick up a copy. Number Ones was made available at various locations and online in traditional black, red, and silver. Sales of all three versions – which are the same except for color and where fans can purchase them – are grouped together for charting purposes.
Michael Jackson Adds Another Top 10 Bestseller to His Catalog
Jackson collects just his fourth top 10 success on the Official Vinyl Albums chart as Number Ones arrives, coincidentally, in fourth place. He previously climbed as high as No. 2 with Scream, but somehow Jackson has never run the show. He also found his way into the loftiest space with both Off the Wall and Thriller, which debuted and peaked inside the top 10 in May 2016 at the same time.
Michael Jackson’s History on the U.K.’s Vinyl Albums Chart
Just one other collection by Jackson has appeared on the Official Vinyl Albums chart, and it is the only one of his five career wins – all of which launched years after his death – that failed to spend time between Nos. 1 and 10. Bad arrived on the roster in December 2015, earning Jackson his first vinyl win in the U.K. That bestseller climbed to No. 18.
Michael Jackson Lands Behind Lily Allen and Stranger Things
During any other week, Jackson might claim the loftiest entry on the Official Vinyl Albums chart by debuting at No. 4, but this is an especially busy frame when it comes to wax records in the U.K. The three spaces above Jackson are also occupied by arrivals, with Lily Allen, Molotovs, and the official soundtrack for season five of Stranger Things opening at Nos. 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Another three sets debut inside the top 10 below Jackson, while two other favorites from pop singer Marina and rock band Alice in Chains reappear inside the uppermost space.
Number Ones Returns to Multiple Tallies in the U.K.
Jackson doubles his total number of appearances inside the top 10 on the Official Albums Sales chart as Number Ones returns at No. 8. The compilation joins Scream, which once topped out at No. 6 and which once stood as his only top 10 success. Thriller came close to the region, but missed out by just one space as it stalled at No. 11.
Number Ones simultaneously returns to three additional rankings in the U.K. Thanks to its vinyl reissue, the compilation can be found within the top 10 on the Official Albums and Official Physical Albums charts, coming in at Nos. 7 and 8, respectively. Number Ones only misses that tier on the Official Album Streaming tally, as it forces its way to No. 13, missing its previously-established No. 12 peak by a single rung.
