Eight years after scoring a life-changing lottery win, a Canadian couple got the shock of a lifetime when they won again.
In 2018, Angelina and Edward Lado won a whopping $2.5 million from Multi-Millionaire Scratch ‘N Win — which broke the record for the largest prize ever bestowed from a scratch ticket, according to The Telegram and the CBC.
The sudden, massive win was especially emotional for the couple, who had moved from South Sudan to Canada just 11 years prior, the CBC reported. And the money presented a possible family reunion, Edward noted.
“My mother, whom I have not seen since I was an infant and have no memory of, is in a refugee camp somewhere in Uganda,” he said in a news release from Atlantic Lottery in 2018, according to the outlet. “I will go to find her and hopefully bring her here. It’s very hard for me to believe that is now possible.”
Angelina and Edward never stopped trying their luck, and last month, lightning appeared to strike the same place twice when they scored again. Naturally, they were in disbelief before the reality set in.
“I thought maybe she was bluffing when she told me, I really couldn’t believe it,” Edward said in a news release from Atlantic Lottery. “I told her to calm down and when I come home, we will see if it is for real.”
Luckily, the couple had been through this process before and knew exactly what to do, lottery officials noted.
This time, the couple played a $4 Scratch ‘N Win ticket, for which the top “Set for Life” prize comes in two forms: either $1,000 payments each week for 25 years or a lump sum of $675,000, the latter of which Angelina and Edward chose.
The secret to their double win, Edward said, is no secret at all: effectively, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
“We play but modestly, especially now, but if you don’t play, you don’t win,” Edward said. “We’ve purchased bigger tickets and not won anything significant on them and then Set for Life costs just $4 and we did.”
“We will think about anything else along the way but for now we are just digesting the moment and letting it sink in,” he added. “We don’t want to rush into anything, taking our time is the best option and things will fall into place as life progresses.”
