Prepare to witness the inspiring life story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the big screen, as renowned comedian Chris Rock steps into the director’s chair for this monumental project.
In the final stages of negotiations, Chris Rock is set to direct and produce a forthcoming biographical film about the iconic civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The project, backed by Universal Pictures, boasts none other than Steven Spielberg as the executive producer.
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the biopic will draw its inspiration from Jonathan Eig’s acclaimed New York Times best-selling biography, “King: A Life.”
Eig’s book, which hit the shelves earlier this year to widespread acclaim, delves deep into the life of Dr. King. It portrays him as a “courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.” Eig’s masterful storytelling brings to life the journey of a man who reshaped American race relations, ultimately becoming a modern-day founding father and the nation’s most mourned martyr.
Chris Rock, known for his talents in comedy and his previous directorial works such as “Top Five” (2014), “Head of State” (2003), and “I Think I Love My Wife” (2007), will take on this significant directorial role. Rock, who recently appeared in George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin,” also treated audiences to his Netflix live stand-up special, “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” in March.
The production of the biopic will see collaboration between Chris Rock, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Amblin Partners, while Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development, Ryan Jones, will oversee the project’s development. The rights to Eig’s book were secured through Lucy Stille at Lucy Stille Literary, representing the David Black Agency.
