On Wednesday, FBI agents searched the Portsmouth office of Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, according to The New York Times. The investigation is tied to possible corruption and bribery tied to marijuana dispensary businesses.
The bureau confirmed only that it carried out a court-authorized search warrant in Portsmouth and said there was no threat to public safety.
The Times also shared that agents searched a nearby cannabis dispensary connected to Lucas, and that the investigation reportedly began during the Biden administration.
Lucas, 82, is a powerful Democratic leader in the Virginia Senate with a career spanning three decades, has not been charged with a crime.
However, the scene quickly drew attention because Lucas has been one of the most visible political figures in Virginia and a central player in recent fights over redistricting and state power.
Allies moved fast to defend her, while critics said the search showed the seriousness of the probe.
“Senator L. Louise Lucas has not been charged with anything! I am deeply concerned by today’s FBI raid,” said Virginia House Speaker Don Scott in a statement. “Given the politicization of this administration — an FBI led by Kash Patel and a Justice Department run by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney — I think people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to conclusions.”
In a statement posted after the raid, Lucas suggested the operation was politically motivated and said it fit a broader pattern of intimidation.
“Today’s actions by federal agents are about far more than one state senator; they are about power and who is allowed to use it on behalf of the people,” Lucas said in a statement on Wednesday night. “What we saw fits a clear pattern from this administration: When challenged, they try to intimidate and silence the voices who stood up to them.”
Law enforcement has released few details, leaving major questions still unanswered about what investigators are looking for and whether anyone else could be targeted. For now, the case puts one of Virginia’s most influential Democrats under a bright spotlight, even as the legal process remains at an early stage.
“I am not backing down,” Lucas said.
