Michael Jackson’s early life is being depicted on the big screen in the new biopic “Michael.”
The film depicts Jackson from his days as a child in Gary, Indiana, performing alongside his brothers in Jackson 5 through to his rise to fame, delivering iconic hits like “Beat It” and “Thriller.” The film only showcases Jackson’s life until the late ‘80s when he kicked off his “Bad” tour.
The Antoine Fuqua-directed movie includes a cast with the late pop icon’s own nephew, Jafaar Jackson, portraying him. There’s also Colman Domingo as the Jackson patriarch Joe Jackson, Nia Long as matriarch Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as MJ’s lawyer John Branca and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones.
The “Billie Jean” singer had a large family that consisted of brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy and sisters Rebbie, La Toya and Janet Jackson. They also had another brother, Marlon’s twin Brandon, who died shortly after birth.
Which Jackson Family Members Are Included in the Movie?
The “Michael” movie includes the iconic singer’s parents and some of his siblings.
Original Jackson 5 members, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael Jackson, as well as La Toya Jackson, are all seen as young children and adults.
However, as fans watch “Michael,” they will notice that some of the Grammy winner’s siblings are not featured in the movie.
Not included in “Michael” are sisters Rebbie and Janet Jackson, as well as brother Randy.
The three have not publicly commented on the film, which is backed by the Jackson estate. La Toya Jackson told Variety at the Los Angeles premiere April 20 that she wishes “every body was in the movie.”
When asked specifically about Janet Jackson, La Toya Jackson replied, “She was asked and she kindly declined, so you have to respect her wishes.”
Fuqua also told Variety that he would’ve loved to have Janet Jackson be involved, adding, “But it’s OK, she’s supportive of Jaafar and that’s what matters.”
There have been some Jackson family members who have publicly been critical of “Michael.”
Last year, Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson, did not give her stamp of approval, sharing that it is “filled with inaccuracies” and “wasn’t involved” after providing feedback on the first draft. She did not detail what she believed was inaccurate.
Ahead of the film’s release, Paris Jackson told “Entertainment Tonight” on March 12 that she wished Domingo and her cousin Jaafar Jackson “success and joy and happiness” on the film.
