Phylicia Rashad got a sweet birthday tribute from a longtime friend.
The Cosby Show actress celebrated her 78th birthday on June 19 and received a special shoutout from friend and collaborator Jasmine Guy. Guy developed her friendship with Rashad through working on A Different World, which was produced and directed by Rashad’s sister, Debbie Allen, as a spinoff of The Cosby Show.
Guy shared two photos of the pair on Instagram. The first was from the 1992 nuptials of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, while the second showed the friends attending an event in late 2024.
Guy captioned the photos, “Happy Birthday @phyliciarashad to someone I’ve known and appreciated for many years. Wishing you a wonderful birthday and a year ahead filled with happiness, good health, and countless blessings. Enjoy your special day!”
Allen, 76, also shared a tribute to her sister on her special day, sharing video of the two of them dancing together on Instagram.
“Happy Birthday, Lish! Like Fine Wine 💋🍷@PhyliciaRashad,” she captioned the video.
Allen and Guy are currently working on A Different World’s sequel series, coming to Netflix this fall, exactly 39 years after the original show’s premiere.
During Netflix’s American Black Film Festival panel last month, Allen spoke about the significance of the show returning in today’s world.
“What was important to us was maintaining what made the original so special, and that feeling that the original gave me,” said Allen.
“One of the things that I think about a lot is wanting the sequel to feel like a warm hug,” she continued. “And to be full of heart and love and community and friendship, but also to have the political consciousness that the original series had.”
