Singer Kirk Franklin nearly lost his temper after a man confronted him following a canceled performance in Philadelphia. The tense exchange ended with security stepping in after the man told Franklin that he and his wife, Tammy Collins, were “going to hell.”

According to Complex, the confrontation happened Sunday after Franklin’s appearance at the Gospel on Independence concert at Philadelphia’s Independence Mall was canceled because of severe weather. Instead of leaving, the gospel singer climbed onto the roof of his SUV to greet fans who had waited to see him.

While speaking with the crowd, a man approached Franklin and repeatedly told him, “You need to repent.” Video from the encounter showed Franklin trying to calm the situation by moving in for a hug, but the man refused and continued confronting him.

The exchange escalated when the man said, “You and your wife are going to go to hell.” Franklin immediately reacted, and security restrained him before the situation could get worse. Someone nearby also told the man to leave.

Afterward, Franklin appeared to joke about the incident on Instagram. Sharing a reel with clips from his weekend performance in Norfolk, Virginia, along with footage of him meeting fans in Philadelphia, he wrote, “I need the weather to repent! LOL!”

Franklin had been scheduled to headline the Gospel on Independence concert as part of the annual Wawa Welcome America celebration. Singer Paula Holloway and a choir of more than 100 singers from churches across the Philadelphia region were also set to perform before lightning, and an approaching storm forced organizers to cancel the event.
