M.I.A. recently reflected on the powerful impact Kanye West had on Jay-Z’s success, stating that Kanye’s creativity played a significant role in Jay’s rise to fame. During her appearance on The PBD Podcast, MIA discussed the dynamic between the two rappers and her own experiences with them.

She explained that while Jay-Z was undeniably influential in the business side of the music industry, Kanye provided the creative energy that made their partnership successful. “He added the creativity to that whole thing,” she said. “I don’t think they give him enough respect and dues. Yes, Jay-Z was more of a businessman. Kanye was always the artistic one. He’s the creative one. I connected with that and Jay-Z obviously had the clout and the reputation. But, I saw that they both represented two different dynamics.”

M.I.A. also touched on their collaboration with Watch the Throne, noting that “only one person was gonna get the throne.” She highlighted their differing paths to success and pointed out the stark differences in their political views, with Jay-Z supporting Barack Obama, while Kanye backed Donald Trump.

M.I.A., who signed with Roc Nation in 2012, left the label just over a year later. She previously accused Jay-Z of pressuring her into getting plastic surgery when she joined Roc Nation, sharing the experience on Instagram Live last November. “The first thing he told me to do is get plastic surgery,” she revealed. “I’m not insecure because I would have got plastic surgery. So their argument of ‘Maya’s insecure, that’s why she needs to massage her ego,’ fails.”

Despite their past collaborations, the relationship between Jay-Z and Kanye West has soured in recent years. Kanye recently expressed his regret over their falling out, admitting, “I always felt like the black sheep.”
