The NBA Finals are getting a dose of Staten Island hip-hop royalty.

Wu-Tang Clan is scheduled to perform at halftime of Game 4 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, June 10, at Madison Square Garden, continuing a Finals entertainment lineup that has spotlighted some of New York City’s biggest music stars.

The appearance comes during a landmark year for the legendary rap collective, which is currently on its farewell tour and is set to be inducted into the 2026 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame later this year.

Here’s what to know about the Wu-Tang Clan’s journey to Game 4 at MSG.

From Staten Island to Madison Square Garden.

Few groups are more closely tied to New York City than Wu-Tang Clan.

Formed in Staten Island in the early 1990s under RZA’s leadership, Wu-Tang Clan brought together RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and Cappadonna, along with the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Their 1993 debut album, “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers),” arrived at a time when West Coast rap dominated the commercial landscape and introduced a grittier sound rooted in New York street life.

Built around RZA’s unconventional production, martial arts film references and vivid storytelling, Wu-Tang quickly established itself as one of rap’s most influential acts. The success of songs such as “Protect Ya Neck” and “C.R.E.A.M.” helped fuel what many consider a broader East Coast hip-hop revival during the 1990s.

An unusual business strategy amplified the group’s impact. Rather than keeping members under one label, Wu-Tang’s structure allowed artists to pursue solo deals while remaining part of the collective. The approach helped launch the successful solo careers of Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and GZA, while expanding the reach of the Wu-Tang brand throughout the music industry.

That brand eventually stretched well beyond music. Founding member Oliver “Power” Grant, who died at age 52 in February, helped turn Wu Wear into one of hip-hop’s earliest successful fashion labels, while the group expanded into television, film and other business ventures. More recently, Wu-Tang became the first hip-hop group to headline a theater residency in Las Vegas and is currently on its farewell tour, “Wu-Tang Forever: The Final Chamber.”

Wu-Tang’s impact extends far beyond songs such as “C.R.E.A.M.”, “Protect Ya Neck” and “Triumph”.

The group helped shape hip-hop fashion through the Wu Wear clothing line and became one of the first rap acts to expand into multiple business ventures and garner success. Its influence can still be seen across music, fashion and popular culture today.

Grant helped that entrepreneurial spirit. Though not a performer, he played a major role in building the Wu-Tang brand and helping launch Wu Wear into a national fashion success.

For a group born in Staten Island housing projects and later embraced around the world, performing during the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden is another chapter in one of hip-hop’s most enduring success stories.
