Disney’s Live-Action “The Little Mermaid” Makes a Big Splash on Disney+ with 16 Million Views

The enchanting world of Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” has captured the hearts of fans worldwide, leading them to dive into their Disney+ accounts with fervor.

Directed by Rob Marshall, this reimagined classic made waves on Disney+ since its premiere on September 6. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this 1989 Golden Globe-winning animated film adaptation has been watched over 16 million times across the globe.

In a press release, Disney proudly announced the movie’s remarkable feat, claiming the throne as the “most-viewed Disney movie premiere” on the platform, as reported by ComingSoon. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Disney+, surpassing the previous record held by “Hocus Pocus 2,” released last October.

Fans couldn’t resist revisiting the underwater world with Princess Ariel, accessing the movie from their home theaters or beloved mobile devices. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina.

Movie critic Lovia Gyarkye commented on the film’s narrative, stating, “Like other live-action remakes, ‘The Little Mermaid’ is a neatly packaged story ribboned with representational awareness. There’s enough in it to fill an evening, but it doesn’t inspire much more than a passing sense of déjà vu.”

As previously reported by BLACK ENTERPRISE, “The Little Mermaid” had an exclusive nationwide theatrical release on May 26, 2023. The opening weekend witnessed sold-out theaters following the #WinWithBlackWomen initiative led by Black women leaders in support of Halle Bailey as Disney’s first Black live-action princess.

The film’s trailer generated tremendous buzz, amassing over 108 million views within the first 24 hours of its March release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

For those eager to add this captivating remake to their collection, Billboard reports that “The Little Mermaid” is scheduled for a Blu-ray/DVD release on September 19, priced at $24.99. Get ready to make a splash all over again with this beloved tale.
