SZA has always been a pro-nature baddie, and now she’s using her platform to speak out against the harmful effects of artificial intelligence on Black and Brown communities. On Wednesday (July 16), she shared her stance in an Instagram Story: “AI is killing and polluting black and brown cities. None of you care ‘cause you’re codependent on a machine. Have a great life.” Underneath the text, she added a meme that read, “yeah, I use AI. Actual imagination.”
In the comments, she expanded on her concerns, urging followers to research the environmental costs of AI. “Please Google the beautiful Black and Brown cities like Memphis that are suffering because of Twitter’s new AI system. Please just Google environmental racism.” She continued, warning that AI doesn’t care if we live or die and that there’s always a price for convenience. “Black and Brown [people] will pay the brunt of it every time. We won’t get it ‘til it’s too late. Y’all don’t hear me, though. Love u regardless.”
The SOS star may be referring to the protests in Memphis against Elon Musk’s xAI company setting up shop in the city. According to The Guardian, environmental activists claim the supercomputer facility has contributed to significant air pollution since its installation.
The Southern Environmental Law Center reported that xAI operated at least 25 portable methane gas turbines without proper permits. Thermal images revealed that 33 turbines were emitting large amounts of heat, whereas Mayor Paul Young stated that only 15 were in use and that permits were still pending at the time.
Backing SZA’s claims and Memphis residents’ concerns, the air permits were officially approved earlier this month, and Musk’s xAI campus is located in a predominantly Black neighborhood. In response, the NAACP filed a notice of intent to sue the company over potential environmental harm.
