Stefon Diggs was found not guilty Tuesday of assaulting and strangling a former private chef following a two-day trial that centered on a financial dispute and the credibility of the accuser. A jury in Norfolk County Superior Court delivered the verdict, clearing the former New England Patriots wide receiver of a felony strangulation charge and a misdemeanor assault and battery charge.
The legal battle stemmed from a Dec. 2 encounter at the professional athlete’s home in Dedham, Massachusetts. Jamila Adams, who served as a live-in chef for the four-time Pro Bowler, testified that an argument over a planned trip to Miami and unpaid wages escalated into physical violence. She told the court that the receiver slapped her with an open hand and wrapped his arm around her neck, leaving her struggling to breathe.
However, defense attorneys Mitch Schuster and Andrew Kettlewell argued that the alleged assault never happened. They characterized the accusations as an attempt to gain financial leverage, citing a $5.5 million civil demand from the chef’s legal counsel. During the trial, the defense presented testimony from several individuals, including a hairstylist, a massage therapist, and chief of staff Jeanelle Sales. Each witness testified to seeing the accuser in the days following the alleged incident, noting they saw no visible injuries, redness, or signs of physical distress.
Throughout the proceedings, Judge Jeanmarie Carroll frequently instructed the witness to answer questions directly, eventually striking portions of the testimony from the record for being nonresponsive. During closing arguments, the defense told jurors that the prosecution failed to provide credible evidence beyond the accuser’s account.
While the acquittal ends the criminal case, the NFL may still take action. The veteran receiver, who was released by the Patriots in March, recorded his seventh career 1,000-yard season last year while catching passes from Drake Maye.
