Tyra Banks has filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix and producers of a docuseries about America’s Next Top Model. She claims the show used heavily edited interviews to build a false narrative about her and the reality series’ history.

According to The Guardian, the lawsuit was filed on Saturday in Los Angeles federal court. Banks said she took part in a 3.5-hour interview for the Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. She claims producers cut it down to 16 minutes and shaped it into a misleading version of her statements.

Her legal team argued that the edits removed key context from her comments. They said, “The accountability Ms. Banks took ended up on the cutting room floor,” her lawyers wrote. “It was there, but viewers were never given the opportunity to see it.”

The filing also disputes how the docuseries handled a specific allegation involving a contestant. It claims the series suggested Banks ignored or downplayed a sexual assault situation and later appeared confused when questioned about it. Banks’ team says that the portrayal is inaccurate and misleading.

According to the lawsuit, producers relied on “selective editing, deliberate omission, and surgical manipulation of continuous footage” to support that narrative. It also states that Banks was not informed she would be asked about the alleged assault during the interview.

Banks’ lawyers said she only viewed the completed docuseries a day before its release in February. They added that she was not given a chance to fact-check the content or respond to claims made by other participants before it went public.

After the release, the lawsuit says the reaction was “swift, harsh, and directed squarely at Ms. Banks.” It also claims the backlash spread beyond social media, including review bombing of her Sydney ice cream shop SMiZE + DREAM.

Her legal team further said Netflix and EverWonder Studio later refused requests for the full interview footage. They argue Banks was left without a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations, describing the lawsuit as “that answer” after attempts to resolve the issue directly were rejected.
