Khaby Lame, who has more than 162 million followers on TikTok and made more than $20 million from the platform in 2024 alone, was briefly detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on June 6 at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. According to an official ICE statement to AFP, Lame was held for immigration violations after overstaying his visa. He had entered the United States on April 30 and was released the same day of his detention. ICE also confirmed that Lame has since left the United States.
Newsweek reports that 25-year-old Lame, whose real name is Seringe Khabane Lame, is an Italian citizen originally from Senegal. As of Saturday afternoon, he had not publicly addressed the incident on social media. Known to millions for his signature silent reaction videos, the influencer is the highest earner on TikTok, making him one of the most popular figures on the platform. Despite the controversy, there was no immediate sign that the incident had affected his standing with fans or his global brand partnerships.
Lame’s TikTok account consistently displays his signature style which involves poking fun at unnecessarily complicated life hacks and online tutorials. He ends each video with a now-iconic gesture: arms outstretched with palms turned upward, wide-eyed and smiling as if to say, “Why make things harder than they need to be?” This unique approach has resonated with audiences around the world, helping him stand out in a crowded social media space.
His creative spark first ignited in 2020 after losing his job as a factory mechanic during the pandemic. Wandering the working-class neighborhood of Chivasso near Turin, where he grew up, Lame began producing content using his phone and a simple message: simplicity can be powerful. The formula quickly caught on, and his audience grew by the millions.
From June 2022 to September 2023, Lame reportedly earned $16.5 million through a variety of brand sponsorships, according to Forbes. These included partnerships with major global companies eager to tap into his enormous reach and influence. His success has made him not only one of TikTok’s top creators but also one of its highest-paid.
The timing of Lame’s detention comes amid heightened immigration enforcement under U.S. President Donald Trump, who took office in January and has since launched a large-scale deportation campaign. Though many aspects of the administration’s immigration policies have been challenged in U.S. courts, the ICE action against Lame reflects the tightened scrutiny even high-profile visitors may face under current regulations.
