Nat King Cole—who is credited on the Billboard charts sometimes as Nat King Cole and in other instances as Nat “King” Cole, as if the honorific isn’t confirmed—has been a force on those musical rankings for decades. During his too-short lifetime, the musician made history with a bevy of big hits, and he changed America’s ideas of what a superstar could look and sound like. Cole is remembered to this day as a legend, but his legacy isn’t stagnant.
This week, Cole collects a brand-new No. 1 hit in the U.S. The late singer’s estate hasn’t released more material that shot to the summit on any Billboard ranking, though. Instead, one of his most famous releases finally climbs to the top spot on a tally that wasn’t introduced until long, long after his death.
“The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)” rises from No. 5 to No. 1 on the current edition of the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart, reaching the top spot for the first time. The holiday cut marks Cole’s only champion on Billboard’s list of the bestselling tracks that can be classified as hip-hop, rap, or R&B.
The now-classic is one of only two tracks that Cole has pushed to the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales ranking, with both arriving decades after he passed, as digital purchases of tunes certainly didn’t exist when he was making music. Another seasonal cut, “O Holy Night,” has managed just a pair of weeks somewhere on the list. In the past, his take on the religious song rose to No. 27, peaking in that position back in 2010.
“The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)” also manages to reach a new, previously unknown high point on one other Billboard charts this week. Purchases of the tune must be bigger than they have been in a long while, as it returns to the all-style Digital Song Sales ranking, where it’s back at No. 9. That placement earns Cole his first top 10 on the roster, as Luminate reports that the standard sold another almost-2,900 copies in the U.S. throughout the past tracking period.
Cole leads more than just the one sales chart this week, as “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)” keeps at No. 1 on several other rankings as it dominates the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales tally. The melancholy tune holds in first place on both the R&B Streaming Songs and R&B Digital Song Sales charts as well, though it’s not new to the throne on those lists.
“The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You)” lives inside the top 10 on nearly every tally it appears on at the moment, though it will likely fade away very soon, as interest in all things Christmas is about to vanish. Cole’s beloved composition is present within the uppermost arena on four more rankings, including both those focused solely on holiday music and others, which speak to the tune’s popularity.
